Welcome to Quiche Moraine
Why Start a New Site?
Blogs are a great opportunity for people to express themselves, to share their unique knowledge and viewpoint with the world. They’re an opportunity for readers to empathize with and get to know people they would never meet in real life. They’re also a lot of work, for both readers and bloggers.
Readers have to work to find the blogs that interest them among the millions out there. If they want to be exposed to something new, they have to overcome the inertia of just reading the sites they already have bookmarked. It’s all too easy to settle into a comfortable niche of the blogosphere and stay there.
Bloggers have to find their audience. This usually means networking with one or more blogging communities, which, while fun, takes time that could be spent writing. It also means shaping a blog to meet reader expectations by posting regularly, readably and with some consistency for topic and tone.
Quiche Moraine is intended to be a place where the best parts of blogging get a little easier for everyone. Readers will have new voices brought to them. Existing bloggers can present themselves to a broader audience and stretch beyond the comforts of their own usual styles and topics. People who have important and interesting things to say but not the time and attention to maintain and promote a blog can have a home for their occasional writing and the help of experienced writers and editors to shape their writing for an audience.
What Will Readers Find Here?
That’s a very good question. The three of us who started Quiche Moraine are peripatetic bloggers. On our individual blogs, you’ll find a mix of culture, politics and science. You’ll find all those here as well. We’re also local to Minnesota’s Twin Cities, which we expect to color Quiche Moraine but not to the exclusion of topics of broader interest. We are by turns whimsical and serious, analytical and emotional. We make no predictions about which of those you’ll get on any given day.
Then there are our guest writers. The only thing we promise they’ll have in common is that they’re interesting and enthused about their topics. We don’t even know who most of them will be yet. You could be one of them. All we really know about them is that the reception we’ve gotten from the first people we’ve asked has been gratifyingly positive.
As for the rest, you’ll just have to find out when we do. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we will.
What’s Up With the Name?
What, you expect us to do all your research for you? You can find a good, flexible recipe for quiche here and start learning about moraines here. All we’re saying is that it’s deeply symbolic—and sounds funny. Both are very important.
Oh, and there really is a Quiche Moraine.
