Observer: Thank you so much for offering to step in and make sense of my world.

But that's OK. It turns out that I actually have an astonishingly high IQ. So I can probably handle it. If you get my drift.

Which you don't.

Nice job, Greg. I totally did not see that coming.

Guess I have a road to travel, too.***

What, to avoid making sense of the world through past experience?

We all saw it through the eyes of our own experience, and a lot of that experience is extremely influenced by the local climate. You may not have as far a road to travel as you think, Michael. Around here (there really wasn't a way to tell who or what "Joey" is,) the men like the Mayor were generally aging, alcoholic and slightly dotty...Mesqwaki.

Thanks for the input. Very interesting.

And much more so when I compare it with my own experience growing up in Europe. Which I saw at that time as more or less equivalent to the United States, our theoretical "ideal".

How wrong I was...

I had many Joey's when I was a kid, but luckily I didn't gett hit on a frequent basis. I used a form of "passive-aggressive" humor to avoid getting hit. For example:

Craig (menacingly:) Haubrich, do you think I am tough?
Me: I think you are tough-looking.

Craig's friends burst out laughing and he would look like an idiot if he hit me.

In Hallock, there were divides between "country" and "city" but everyone was largely of the same ethnic makeup. Only rarely did we run into ethnic groups that were different from ours, and I have written about that at Tuibguy.com. We also had a "class" divide but it didn't run too deep, because we had so few social institutions that kids crossed over the class line to be members of 4H, the hockey clubs, etc.
