How Inventions Happen
One of the fascinating side stories in Dragnet is the quirky relationship between Bill Gannon and Joe Friday, and in particular, Bill’s reporting of his occasional schemes and Joe’s incredulous reaction to them. When Carl and I wrote faux Dragnet scripts back in the day, these schemes were always featured. Zany, offbeat, but to Bill confidence-inspiring…This one is a classic:
Go for it, Bill! We love your Socratic Method!

Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) was the remake of Dragnet. The original TV series had Joe Friday paired with Frank Smith (Ben Alexander). As much as I love Harry Morgan, Ben Alexander was the best and only.

That early version just never registered on my radar screen. I love Morgan in this role, and given the fan-fiction (as it is now called) that I wrote on it, that will always be true.
But, I do want to see these earlier Dragnets.
